Inleiding

    Malaya Command werd in 1924 geformeerd om de verdediging van Brits Maleisië te organiseren. Aanvankelijk een klein garnizoen, werd het commando in 1939 sterk uitgebreid vanwege de stijgende dreiging in het Verre Oosten. In 1942 werd het Malaya Command door de ontwikkelingen aan het front opgeheven, maar na de Japanse overgave weer ingesteld. Met de onafhankelijkheid van Maleisië in 1957 werd het commando weer opgeheven.

    Geschiedenis

    In 1924 werd Malaya Command ingesteld ter verdediging van het uit de Straits Settlements, Federated Malay States en Unfederated Malay States samenvoeging van Brits Maleisië (Malakka). Aanvankelijk was dit commando opgebouwd uit lokale eenheden met garnizoenen in Kuala Lumpur, Taiping, Seremban en Singapore.

    Met de groter wordende internationale dreiging in 1939 en het uitbreken van de oorlog in Europa, werd besloten om Malay Command te versterken. Dit werd voornamelijk gedaan met eenheden uit Brits India aangezien de meeste Britse eenheden in Europa ingezet waren. Rond november 1940 bestond het commando uit 17 bataljons, waarbij het Indiase deel voornamelijk was ondergebracht bij het IIIrd Indian Corps met een hoofdkwartier in Kuala Lumpur. Om de regionale coördinatie op de verdediging te bevorderen, werd op 18 november 1940 het Malay Command onder bevel gesteld van het Far East Command (UK).

    Met de reorganisatie van de geallieerde troepen in het Verre Oosten en de Zuidelijke Pacific werd op 7 januari 1942 het commando onder bevel gesteld van ABDA-Command. Op 15 januari 1942 werd Malay Command opgeheven na de overgave van Britse troepen in Maleisië en Singapore.

    Toen in augustus 1945 de Japanse troepen zich overgaven, werd op 1 november 1945 door omvorming van het Britse 14th Army opnieuw een Malaya Command geformeerd met hoofdkwartier in Singapore. In augustus 1947 werd dit commando omgevormd tot een Malaya District en een Singapore District, welke echter vanwege de "Malayan Emergency" (Maleise Burgeroorlog) in augustus 1950 weer werden opgewaardeerd tot een Malaya Command. Met de onafhankelijkheid van Maleisië op 31 augustus 1957 werd het commando opgeheven en werden alle lokale troepen van het commando ondergebracht bij de Overseas Commonwealth Land Forces (Malaya)
