The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal to Lieutenant Commander William Howard Dimmick, United States Navy, for meritorious performance of duty as Gunnery Officer of the U.S.S. TUSCALOOSA prior to and during the invasion of France, 6 June 1944. Maintaining his department in a high state of alertness for a long period, Lieutenant Commander Dimmick insured that the ship's guns were ready for action at all times. His untiring energy, initiative and devotion to duty was an inspiration to all under his direction. His efforts were directly responsible for the prompt and accurate fire brought to bear on enemy batteries and for the successful accomplishment of many bombardment and fire support missions. The professional skill and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Commander Dimmick on this occasion was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
