- Rang:
- Technical Sergeant (Sergeant)
"Awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action on 15 October 1944 in France. While advancing on enemy soldiers toward the direction of the Mortagne River, the light machine gun section that Technical Sergeant Robert G. Slade was attached to received a heavy barrage of small arms and mortar fire. Slade, discovering that out of his entire machine gun section he was the only man on his feet, manned his machine gun and succesfully covered the road which was a natural approach from the German positions. His accurate fire inflicted many casualties and prevented the enemy from attacking. Even though numerous shells burst in the trees near Slade's position he remained with his gun and stopped several German assaults. Together with the riflemen of his company and the attached weapons he broke up the enemy counterattack".
